which is the routers ip adressthe IPv4 address you find in the command prompt, or is it the default gateway?
can you just make up your own static ip address? i know that it has to be similar to the routers ip address, but i dint know what that is, or if i can make up a static ip. Ive also tried to foward my ports with a static ip address i made, but it didnt work for some reason. I know the game needs a lot of ports open, but im pretty dure i did that already. please help

Start with what is your router's IP address?

Before you start, you need to know the DNS, gateway and netmask. You get this using DHCP on your computer and checking everything under the network status, or by running the ipconfig/all command.

Write everything down first...

Now to start:

Example, if your router is 192.168.1.1 (as shown as default gateway above), set your PC to 192.168.1.2 in the network properties (TCP/IP settings). In there, you have to enter the DNS, default gateway, and netmask as well.

Next, re-check the port forwarding in the router, passing the required ports to 192.168.1.2. Be sure to enable it, and click on the "Save" - usually at the bottom of the screen.

In setting ports, you can probably specify a range, like a start and end port, or by specifying an actual range (depends on router model).

That should be it - be sure to check your firewall as well, it will probably block those ports by default. A simple test is to turn off the firewall just to test the port forwarding, but you had better turn it back on real quick after. Once you know any quirks about the firewall, you can set/fix that once it is back on. Do not run the game with the firewall off, you will get into trouble down the road!

OK - let's try to make some sense of all this

First - Your system actually has 2 IP addresses.

Address #1 - The Internet IP address is the one the world sees. It is assigned by your ISP and you have no control over it. Just understand it is there, but don't worry about it.

Address #2 is the address your computer has on the LAN. This IP address tells the router where your computer is on the network so it can send information to it. You have control over this IP address

Now Port Forwarding -

A router typically blocks all traffic from coming into the network it controls (your home network) unless you have sent a message out first to that web site. So when you want to go to Yahoo, you send a message out, the router remembers it and when Yahoo answers back, the router lets the traffic in and you see the web page.

But when you are gaming, there are times that outside computers must call you. If the router is not set up to allow this, the game does not work. That is what port forwarding is about.

So the steps we need to take are:

1. establish a fixed IP address for your computer

On you task bar is a network icon. Click on it. It brings up a pop up.

Click on the support tab

Now you see the IP address, subnet mask and default gateway.

Write these numbers down.

Click on the details button

Find your DNS servers

Write those addresses down

Once we know these numbers we can assign our address, Close the details pop up, select the General Tab and click properties. That brings up a new pop up. Highlight Internet Protocol and click on the properties button. Now you see some selections and radio buttons.

Select "Use the following IP address"

You can now enter data in the fields

Decide your fixed IP address this way

The IP address for your comp was (example) 192.168.0.100

The default gateway address was (example) 192.168.0.1

We want to pick an IP address that will not conflict with your router, so enter an address of (example)192.168.0.10 (Match the first 3 groups exactly. the last group is your unique address. Most home routers assign between 100 and 150. Using a number at least 50 addresses away from the router should keep conflicts to a minimum

Enter a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

Enter the default gateway that you wrote down

Now click on the Use the following DNS server addresses and enter the addresses you wrote down

Click OK

Click OK again

Now verify you can get on the Internet

OK - now we have a fixed IP address and we can port forward

If you cannot, keep at it until you can. You can always get back to where you were by going back to the auto selections

Get the port numbers you need to forward. You can get them from the FAQs at the games web site

Now we access your router

Get out the manual and see how to use your browser to access the setup pages

you'll type something like 192.168.0.1 into your browsers address bar. That gets you a pop up. Enter the user name and password from the manual. It's usually something like admin admin

Once in the router setup pages go to the advanced section

Find the port forwarding section

Using the router manual enter the port or range of ports you want to forward

Enter the IP address you gave your computer

save your settings

restart the router

check out your game

You can't do this through DHCP (you can but you wouldn't want to). You could write a script and put it on a flashdrive to quickly set the IP address statically for each machine. I don't know why keeping the IP the same each time is important, so I can't really help find an economical solution.
