ISP Means Internet Service Provider, ie, AOL pr MSN or more, through which you are communicating with the internet. So you must be a user in that isp in order to get access through their computer, all ISPs equipped with some user tracking system, that mens,it will log(record) all the activity that the user may do with their computer. It contains your visit to different web sites, your computer informations, your browser informations and your location. if u r connecting through a telephone line, then your telephone number too will be logged.

Its all logged for security purpose only, usually they wont bother about small things , but if got some complains about something, then they will provide all these informations to the authorized person.

They will not use satellite and all to track users, tracking means NOT taking photo of the person and seeing what he or she doing. But tracking the internet activity of a particular user.

With your first statement, is ISP used for tracking?

I believe that, which is a common mistake, you are mixing up IP and ISP. Your IP is basically a phone number, but for your computer, people can track you using it and see what connections are coming from where and when.

Internet forums often use IPs to find spammers, so they can use a sort of 'global' ban on that IP, keeping them from being able to create new accounts or access the site from the said IP. The same thing can sometimes be done with e-mails, and other services but IPs are often hidden except to administrators.

Your ISP is essentially who you pay to give you this wonderful tool called the internet, Internet Service Provider.

Common ones are Comcast, Roadrunner, Qwest.

Some websites that can further define for you:

BTW, my phone metaphor may have been a bad one, it's just what I had on the tips of my fingers =)

Short for Internet Service Provider, a company that provides access to the Internet. For a monthly fee, the service provider gives you a software package, username, password and access phone number. Equipped with a modem, you can then log on to the Internet and browse the World Wide Web and USENET, and send and receive e-mail.

In addition to serving individuals, ISPs also serve large companies, providing a direct connection from the company's networks to the Internet. ISPs themselves are connected to one another through Network Access Points (NAPs).

ISPs are also called IAPs (Internet Access Providers).

Internet Service Provider...It's the service provider from whom you subscribed for your internet subscription. You'll be given an ISP number, which is more or less, your account..You could actually be tracked with that.
