Hi. I have Linksys WRT54G wireless router and a cable modem. I have it for a while. I unhooked the router for a few days and just used direct cable since no one was using wireless.

As 1000 times I have done before, I connect the ethernet cable from the cable modem to the 'internet' port on the Router. Then I take another ethernet cable and connect it from 1 of the 4 ports into the base computer.

I walk upstairs to my other comuter and I am getting full signal strength. But I get no internet connection. So I try the few novice things I know and they don't work. I notice I am not receiving any packets.

So I go back downstairs to the base computer and it's not connecting. So I test out both ethernet cable going direcly from the cable modem to that computer and I have internet. Then I tried both cables in each orientation in every which way and it's not sending packets or connecting on either computer.

Is the router dead ? I am getting a signal from it so I'm suspicious if that's even the issue.

I have unplugged the wireless router and I guess I need to hold down the reset button on the back for 5 minutes and leave it unplugged for an hour ???

Is there anything else I can really do ?

Currently it's just connected to the main computer as I try and google this issue at the same time.

TL:DR

WRT54G isn't sending packets and getting connection on either computer even though I've tested both ethernet cables as working fine.

Power the router into the wall and wait for about 2 minutes. Don't plug any network cables in yet. In the meantime, set your PC to have a static address of 192.168.1.2 (Any 192.168.1.x address except 1). Set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. You don't need a gateway or anything else.

Now, on the router, using a paperclip or pen, hold the reset button for 5-10 seconds. Wait again 2 minutes.

Plug a network cable from you PC to one of the 4 ports on the router (not the WAN port). Using Internet Explorer, navigate to http://192.168.1.1. The username should be "admin"; no password. (Note: on some routers, the username is blank, and the password is "admin.")

Set up the router according to the instructions (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBgQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fec1.images-amazon.com%2Fmedia%2Fi3d%2F01%2FA%2Fman-migrate%2FMANUAL000000300.pdf&rct=j&q=wrt54g%20manual&ei=aNUpTp_hOoLJgQfLmoyZCw&usg=AFQjCNFtVifBmzQhHWRjJYp_C1EyaF5uug&sig2=OpM_NmTkP7_z-yH108YJbw&cad=rja)

Note that by default, the radio is off. Also note that the router should get a firmware upgrade. Follow the instructions in the PDF link I gave you.

The installation application isn't mandatory yet because of the fact the different poster suggested it is going to stroll you thru installation and setup so because it somewhat is amazingly helpful. Cable modems bind to the gadget handle of the 1st ingredient they hook up with. So if the modem became related to a working laptop or workstation straight away then it truly is sure to that workstation. once you place a router into the mixture you will get the modem to bind to it fairly of the workstation. this might commonly be accomplished by using unplugging the flexibility from the two the router and the modem for about 30 seconds then plugging the modem lower back in immediately observed by using the router. Then reboot your workstation. If that doesn't fix the priority then use the linksys installation application or touch your cable cyber web service's help line.
