It's mostly dependant on the speed of the other computer that you are downloading a file from . Try another site , like a mirror that is closer to you .. i.e. like a server that is in your state v.s. one thats overseas the closer you are the faster the speed will be ( mostly ) . Unless the server is really busy :)

Plus you never get 100% of your max speed becase you share bandwith with other users of your service . Like people with 56 k dialup connect at 44.6kbs but really speeds are like 5k for downloads thats life :)

Actually. this download speed is based on a few things, such as connection speed (do yourself a favor and get some cheap form of broadband), priority (what level that particular websites server decides you require), Processor speed/ram/running programs (how fast your computor can handle that information. What you need to realize is that the internet doesn;'t all run at the same speed. Each and every website has their own server (big computor) and each one runs at a different speed, in different locations, and at different capacities. Yahoo, for example, will typically lopad very quickly, whereas some local college/government site may run incredibly slowly, depending on how many people are downloading from it, and their own servers speed, as well as THEIR internet connection speed. There are tons of things you can do to speed up your computer, but if you want faster download speeds, number ONE, upgrade your ISP service, at LEAST to 1.5mbps. (even that is VERY slow) 2 would be to make sure to download from fast, reputable sites, and lastly 3 would be to close all other unnecessary programs running to give more processor time/ram to the internet. The speed at which you download files is limited by many factors, including the speed of the web site from which you donwload - not only your connection pipe.

Also, often there's confustion between kilobits per second (which is usually the speed reported by ISPs) and kilobytes per second (which is usually the speed reported by browsers). If your speed is 512 kbits/s (as opposed to kilobytes), then your download speed would be about 64 kilobytes per second.

This site will help you measure the actual speed:

If it's significantly lower than what you pay for to ISP, call them and ask what's wrong.

512kb is the maximum speed which is distributed among the users in the particular area. u can have that speed if no one else is using it. 80kbps for 512kb is a pretty good speed.and if u r using a broadband connection, its faster if u r close to the exchange/distribution.

download speed multiplied by 6 times is the actual speed of your internet, at 512kbps net connection if u have 80kb downstream is excellent quality spped

512kbps is your connection speed that your network responds @

80kb,is your download rate

to find your rate u can always do google calculator by trying

512kbps to KBps in your google search and that will give your speed.

then to learn your speed speed u can always do speedtest.net

Compress the hard drive. That speeds things up. BTW it takes about 12 hours so do it before you go to work or something like that.

512 is your max speed

you can only go that fast if your the only person using the servers/routers
