Well, the "Internet" has no speed. The "Connection" does on the other hand...

The speed is most generally offered through a specific ISP. Depending on the Company, and the System they run on. Whether they use Dial-Up, DSL, Broadband, etc. And then the packages they offer. Most offer High-speed Internet as a Premium package. But depending on the company, it is usually offered in "Boosts" not a steady speed. So it seems faster... but really isn't.

Speed is measured in MB/ S (Megabits Per Second). This is how fast it loads a page, streams videos, how long it takes to load a pictures, etc. Different Web-Browsers really optimize loading times depending on Add-ons and stuff that load in addition to a Web Page. Google Chrome is one of the fastest. It can make slow connection speeds seem fast... . Most companies offer about 12 MB/S and High Speed around 16MB/S.

I hope I helped!

Yes the internet speed depends completely on the package you get from the ISP. It is measured in megabits (not megabytes) per second, or mbps. For comparison, 8 megabits equal 1 megabyte. To measure your connection speed, you can go to this site: speednet.net

I don't know what the average is, but I'd guess it's somewhere near 10mbps.

The speed of the Internet? The speed of any connection is only as fast as it's slowest connection. How fast YOUR connection is depends upon what package you buy from your ISP. The higher the number, the better. Mbps is faster than Kbps.

56Kbps is slow

256Kbps is below average.

6Mbps is OK

12Mbps is better

50Mbps is great.

Speed where in the Internet?

The Internet is a bunch in interconnected networks. Your ISP has a network, that connects directly to one or many other ISPs networks, that is how the Internet is built.

The typical breakdown is there are access links (you connect to ISP) and core links (ISP to ISP). Each ISP will have it's core network.

The fastest links internal to the cores are 40Gpbs. The actual network devices that operate in these cores are much faster, in the terabps per second.

The Cisco CRS is a typical core router - http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps5763/index.html

Typically its measured in Mb/s

The internet is millions of routers interconnected, nothing more. The speed depends highly on the cable used for certain connections.

In general 10mb/s download is a good internet speed.
