Question:
Comcast Business Modem and Linksys Router Setup?
2013-10-22 09:02:26 UTC
I'm trying to setup a Comcast Business Class Modem - SMCD3G - With a Linksys E2000 router for our office.

The router works fine, with the Default Setup, with IP 192.168.1.1, and Automatic Configuration - DHCP as the Internet connection type. The modem has IP 10.1.10.1 with a range from 10 to 199. The modem successfully provides an IP to the router, right now it's 10.1.10.22 (although it can change). I also have a Windows server 2003 setup as the DNS under 10.1.10.31

I want to setup the router under the same IP range as the modem. I changed the Router's IP on the Basic Setup page to 10.1.10.1, 10.1.10.2 and 10.1.10.12, 10.1.10.199, and none of these work. What happens when I change the IP is that the router fails to get an IP address from the DHCP from the Comcast Modem.

The reason why I want them under the same range, is to be able to access some printers / server / computers that are connected directly to the Comcast Modem. The Linksys router is mostly to provide wireless to some clients that use their laptops in the office.

Is there any way to Set it up so the wireless laptops can see the devices on the Comcast range?

I see that you posted this question to the Spiceworks forum also, very cool.

You're main issue is that you have two routers, both doing DHCP. That's not a good thing. Log into the Linksys and disable its DHCP service. Just let the SMC router handle DHCP for now. Secondly, change the LAN IP of the Linksys from 192.168.1.1 to something on the SMC network, such as 10.1.10.2. Plus the SMC into the Linksys using the LAN ports only. Don't use the WAN port on the Linksys, because its not your WAN - the SMC is.

What you end up with is the Linksys router acting like a wireless access point, providing network access to anything connected to it. The SMC is handling all DHCP and internet related traffic.

You can setup your router by plug in your router to modem and access it by typing in your browser 192.168.1.1. You would be able to access your router and change its settings.

If you are unable to fix this just visit http://www.linksysroutersupport247.com and get a certified technician on a single call.
