It depends if you wanted your mums computer to be wireless.

You could simply use a ethernet cable from your mums pc to the wireless router.

Or you could buy a cheap wireless adapter ( I reccomend the Belkin 54g adapter) Argos sell it for £20.00

Cheap cheerful and quick.

The wireless adapter is USB so problem solved? Ill be online on yahoo messenger for more info.

My assumptions:

You have an old and new computer

You have a wireless not a wired modem router unless of course you have a USB adapter from USB to Ethernet and connect a cable to it for non wireless networks.

Anyway if you have a wireless network your mums computer needs a wireless network card (if its a desktop) or if the desktop has usb ports it can have the a wireless USB adapter. Although wireless routers also have wired connections available so you might only need an ethernet card and an ethernet cable for your mums computer.

in summary

Check your mums computer has an ethernet card

if it has you can connect using wires

Check if your mums computer has a wireless network/ethernet card

if it has you can connect to the wireless router

Check your mums computer has USB ports

if it does you can use a wireless usb adapter which is just like the wireless network card but connected via usb

you should be able to connect it through the LAN slot.

if not follow the instructions to install via USB, you usually have to install the drivers and software befor you connect the USB.

if there is a LAN slot then you should be able to simply plug in the cable and off you go. (that is what i do) and the wireless one should be able to conenct aswell (i connect laptop and comp at same time like this)

you might have trouble when connecting becasue of the WEP key or passwords for wireless connection. make sure all CaPiTaLs are as they are on the code.

if you want both to connect wirlessly, i would suggest buying a wireless usb dongle off ebay or www.overclockers.co.uk or www.ebuyer.co.uk and plugging it into your mums computer.

Older laptops need wireless adapters for wireless routers. you say yours is wired, if so and it has no wireless you just use a network cable to connect.
