It's a dell dimension 2400, and after setting up the Microsoft Home networking, it started disconnecting internet sessions and asking to reconnect using the dialup connection

Sounds like you have a bigger problem. Mainly your network connection must be dropping for IE to attempt dial-up. Check the following in IE: Tools|Internet Options|Connections
I would guess that it says "Dial whenever a network connection is not present". Change it to "Never Dial".
That will prevent the dial up from happening but it still sounds like your cable is the bigger problem as it is dropping your connection to cause the dial-up to connect.

in spite of in case you may do it, you do not choose to share a 5.6 Kbps connection with 2 computers. that's going to take a minute for a image severe website to load on dialup. Now think of doubling the time if 2 computers have been applying it.

Delete your dial up connection in Network connections.
Start...Network Connections...View Network Connections and delete the dial up.

disconect the phone line from the modem
