I would advise not using Sendmail. despite years of changes it has become very complex with poor security. Better to use Postfix which is a very light server with massive handling capacity. And always use the Maildir/ type storage, on a busy server the /var/spool/mail storage creates clumsy files containing all inbox mails in one file. These regularly corrupt. They are almost impossible to recover, except by manual editing. And you don't say which IMAP/POP3 server you are using, some are very poor. You can NOT connect apache to the mail system. You need to write a mail server program using IMAP for it. This will definitely need the Maildir/ format to be available. You will need to set up sasl authentication for use with SMTP clients. You could try installing the Squirrelmail IMAP server, this is a reliable IMAP interface. You will need the server to have a fully qualified domain name at the registrar's DNS servers, or you will be blocked as a spam risk. And make sure the MX records are correct. Be extremely careful of security. A poorly configured server can put you on every spam blacklist in the world within a week. Get on an AOL blacklist and you are on it for lie.
