Question:
Where can I find an up to date HTTP Proxy Server for Windows?

I am traveling to China starting at the end of this week. I have heard all about the Great Firewall of China. Instead of play hit or miss with the thing regarding certain domains, I would rather route my HTTP traffic through a proxy server. Instead of using a random anonymous proxy out there, I would prefer to host my own. I am looking for a SOCKS or similar type proxy server software that I will be able to run on my server and set up my iPhone's wifi connection to use that proxy.

The main problem I have been having is finding a good software platform that is up to date. I have tried WinProxy 1.5, which I found to be extremely slow, probably due to the fact that it was written in the 90's. I want to find something that is much more up to date and much faster, but has the same general setup.

I will appreciate any pointers I get in the right direction.

Thanks!

Try Privoxy for a decent, up-to-date proxy server with ad-blocking.

You can also check out port tunnelling with windows using an ssh server (google for sshd or visit http://pigtail.net/LRP/printsrv/cygwin-sshd.html) and PuTTY (google putty or visit http://chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/).

I would possible suggest using a VPN tunnel over a Proxy Server. A proxy server like wingate is great for an internal network as it helps speed up webpages by using cached information each time you make a return visit to a page. However if you make a proxy server that you can get to from outside the network, you may find it difficult to setup and secure.

Either way setting up a VPN is not only secure, but also you can configure the VPN so that all web requests get sent through your home gateway, which makes it a proxy of sorts.

If you are still sold on the idea of a proxy there are quite a few free programs that will do the trick, however most of them are made to be used inside a network. I would suggest checking out Squid, as it is a great opensource project which is available for all platforms including Windows. http://www.squid-cache.org for more info.

Good Luck.

3proxy 0.6 is finally released. 0.6 branch is now marked as stable, 0.7 as development, 0.5 is not longer supported except security issues.

WARNING!

Due to compiler change in default Windows package, 3proxy 0.6 uses slightly different counters file format (counter file is created with "counter" configuration command). If you use counters on Windows, please either remove old file (counters information will be lost) or convert counter file to new format with countersutil.exe. Alternatively, 3proxy-0.6-lite.zip package may be used (not recommended). You are not affected by this issue if you're building 3proxy from source with same compiler.

This is not security update, yet some functionality bugs are fixed in 0.6 and a lot of new features are added. Key new features are: plugins support (including plugins for PCRE regexp filtering support for URL and HTTP headers/data and proxy HTML pages customization, LDAP authentication/authorization), SMTP proxy support, unique ICQ/AOL and MSN proxy support with ability to limit access by UIN/screen name, hostnames with wildcards are allowed in ACLs instead of IP networks and more.
