The Linux Desktop is currently a mess with a plethora of options available. Unity as on Ubuntu 11.10 and GNOME 3 as on Fedora 16 are cluttered and in my opinion not suitable for use on a production machine. I need a Desktop Environment that allows me to just get things done with minimal fuss. This is where the older Gnome 2 Desktop Environment excels.

Linux Mint 12 goes some way to addressing this wth MGSE (Mint Gnome Shell Extensions) which is a layer built on top of GNOME 3 however like other distros. such as Fedora to deploy the GNOME 3 Desktop Environment for me does not convince

There is a promising project being developed by Linux Mint called Cinnamon which is also a layer built upon GNOME 3 and will replace MGSE on Linux Mint 13 LTS

I thoroughly recommend the earlier release Linux Mint 11 which is based upon Ubuntu 11.04 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 11 then you need to create a Bootable LiveDVD

Linux Mint 11 can also be run straight from the LiveDVD without touching your Hard Drive

There are around 300 distros for linux. You must try several Linux distros before settling for one. Ubuntu, Mint. Mandriva, Ultimate edition, KDE, Suse Linux all are good distros. Ubuntu seems to be the most popular with a upgrade being released every six months. If you are interested in sound and video editing and production Ubuntu Studio is a good selection. Good online support through discussion forms is available for all linux distros You can use a Live CD and try a distro without installing it onto the hard drive..

There really is no "best Linux"

All Linux distros have the same core, the Linux Kernel. The differences show up in how the rest of the package is put together.

How is the operator interface (GUI) done?

How are programs and software handled?

How are files organized?

How well does the distro's community help the newcomer?

How well is it supported?

It really comes down to trying them out and seeing what works best for you. Because that is what Linux is all about, your freedom to operate your computer the way you want, not the way some corporation wants you to.

If you are using Linux for the first time, I would suggest you to go for Ubuntu. You will find it much similar to Windows Vista or 7.

I have used Ubuntu and it has a very nice GUI and very easy to use for non-experienced Linux users as you wont need to write much codes , just the basic stuff .

That's a holy war.

But out of those two, my choice would be Ubuntu.

And be sure, I tested both of those.

Ubuntu. Opensuse 12.1 with Gnome is even better.
