There is a big difference between the the IP address, subnet mask and DNS server but actually they are closely interrelated.

The IP address is a unique address that will be assigned to a specific computer. There must no the same IP address within the network.

While the subnet mask works on grouping these computers. You can set how many number of networks through setting the subnet mask. By default 255.255.255.0 is a subnet mask for ONE network group of computers that could have up to 254 computers.

The DNS server acts as the directory of all the computers within the network group. Most of the DNS server in a local network is assign to the router which is 192.168.1.1

That's only I've learned in school.

IP address is internet protocol address a number unique to the computer you are using at the time. Default Gateway a host is given the IP address of the router through this. The default gateway address is the address of the router interface connected to the same local network as the source host. A Mask a 32 bit mask shows how an internet address is divided into network, subnet and host parts. DNS Domain Name System or Service, an internet service that translates domain names to IP addresses. Hope this is helpful, I took a cisco course a while ago and although I can't remember much of it, this is the type of stuff it covers.

The easiest way to understand this is this...

Your IP address is broken into two parts, the network address and the host (your computer) address. Your subnet mask tells computers which of these is which. A DNS server is a (Domain Name Server/Service), which translates IP addresses into names..eg...www.yahoo.com is a FQDN or fully qualified domain name. yahoo's ip address is something like 209.131.36.158. In layman's terms this is what it is. If your house address was 100 Yahoo ST. Washington 90909. You ip address would be this.

Washington.90909.Yahoo St. 100 Subnet for that would be

255.255.255.0 or any variation of a /24 subnet. So the 255's say what state, zip, and street. and the 0 or any variation says what house.
