Right now I'm downloading Team Fortress 2 using Steam, and the download time was a whopping 14 hours. I'm worried about my laptop overheating if I leave it on that long, so is it possible that I could just let it download for a while, turn it off, and the next time I turn it on, continue downloading it? Would shutting it down pause it, or stop the download and force me to re-download it again? Also, if you leave it on sleep mode, would it continue downloading? I use Windows 8.

It's very doubtful your game will actually take 14 hours to complete. The download speed usually starts slow but picks up speed within 20 minutes if you just let it run.

That is unless you are on a very slow connection like mobile internet or something similar bad

If you have a decent internet speed all around then you can change the server localization you download from, in steam settings. That might make a difference

Dont do like that.. If you shut down it will stop .

I recommend to buy a laptop cooler which will keep the temperature of the laptop steady and the download going on...
