I've scoured all of the internet to absolutely no avail. I've recently installed a fresh copy of win xp pro service pack 2 on my newly built computer. I use an Intel DP45SG motherboard with the onboard LAN. I've done pretty much everything that would be the problem with my internet connection and I don't know what else to do. I've even installed the KB884020 update patch that usually takes care of service pack 2 connectivity problems. I just double-clicked on it, installed and rebooted. I read somewhere about having to install it into my registry to complete the installation but I haven't done that. Is that necessary? Anyway, I deleted the partition, reinstalled win xp pro and did NOTHING else except install the SP2 update patch and then the lastest drivers for my motherboard's LAN controller. I've check the connection and everything is working perfectly according to my ISP. Actually, it obviously is because I'm typing from my old computer that's using the SAME wires/modem/settings as my new computer is. only difference is my new comp is fresh with absolutely nothing else installed except windows XP pro SP2. Is there another patch that I don't know about other than KB884020 that can fix this problem? It seems many people all over the internet over the years have been able to solve their problem by /renewing /releasing or by using that netsh or flushdns commands. I've done all of that and checked to make sure DHCP service is on. The drivers are up to date and have reinstalled about 8 times now and I still keep having that problem. It tries to acquire a network address and simply times out. I can send packets but receive 0 packets all the time. When I tried pinging a sit it sent 32 bytes. The test results showed 4 packets sent, 0 received with a 100% loss.
I know it's not a hardware problem, nor an ISP connectivity problem. I suspect that it is an XP update problem but I thought that I only needed that update patch KB884020 that is used to patch the "limited or no connectivity" bug in service pack 2 of windows xp pro. Is there another step I need? I've been up for 9 hours trying to figure this out and I just can't understand how a fresh copy of windows XP installed in a completely emtpy harddrive with only updated LAN drivers can still cause a problem. I'm at the end of my rope here so if anyone has any idea of what the problem could be I would really appreciate any help. I'd hate to end up with a very expensive calculator on my hands. If it doesn't have an internet connection it's practically useless for everyday computer use. Thanks again.
Oh and I did the whole "reboot, reset modem, check wires" thing. Basically the obvious steps have been taken already.
