obvisiously the speed is 10x faster than a 100mbit network card but you will not get that out of a wireless network and to achieve those speeds out of a network that is wired your have to a have a gigabit switch or router and at least cat5e network cables recommended cat6 and even then ends on the network cables need to be the correct ones. If you have one link in the chain that isn't rated for gigabit speed than everything just bottlenecks there and your right back to 100mbit speed anyways. For most people with a regular cable or dsl connection the speeds for internet are going to be less than 10mbit anyways so if your trying to make your internet faster by doing this don't waste your money. The only way to make your internet faster is to pay more money to your ISP and get a faster internet package. Your internal network is where you will benifit from these speeds for example if you had a bunch a people over and everyone connected up to your router or switch so that you could play a game like a lan party this is where these speeds would be awesome or if you have a couple of systems on your home network that you like to transfer alot of files back and forth to this is where you see the speed

Keeping things simple when you are comparing a 10/100 to a gigabit network it would be 10/100 vs 1000 in terms of capacity.

for home use and simple Internet surfing your best bet is to stick with a 10/100 configuration as you would not be able to take advantage of the 1000bit capacity and it would be cheaper as well.

because of the fact your question is fairly perplexing, i'm going to might desire to make some assumptions. once you're saying which you have a on the spot connection that hooks up with a cable, i'm going to anticipate which you propose, your modem is declared to the cable/DSL. And which you connect with the modem by potential of WiFi. If those assumptions are appropriate suited, and your daughters laptop additionally has WiFi, then you definately could have the skill to connect her laptop a similar way you connect yours. If no longer, then you definately've a heavily jacked up ISP. If my assumptions are incorrect, in keeping with threat you need to furnish some information like : who's your ISP and what's the kind sort of the modem/humorous black field related to the wall. If in certainty, you could in easy terms connect one laptop to the modem at a time, then that's an person-friendly remember to connect your 2 computers, using a crossover cable, and then going into your community connections and installation connection sharing. You did no longer say what working device you're using, so i won't furnish distinctive suggestions.

transfer rate.. 100mb vs 1000mbits

as for routers , look on ebuyer.co.uk

but I stick with netgear, I doubt you'll get one of them for that money though, best look at the specs.. I'd guess £60 or £70 more like

or try their own brand ones

gigabit i think is the data transfer rate, it refers to 10 to the 9th power (1,000,000,000) bits. its the transfer rate of that card.. i also dont know about 10/100s..all i know is that its the card speed.. 10/100Mbps.. but i dont know how fast it really is..
