the computers are both in the same room and are both desk tops. I would really like to just use the cat 5 cable I already have and also need to know how to set the IP address on the second computer so it will connect. The first computer only has 1 ethernet hook-up on the back and I dont know how to route the cable from 1st computer to modem then 2nd computer either.

Both computers will most likely only have 1 ethernet port each. On PC1 you will need the port to connect directly to your modem so there will be no available port on PC1 left to connect PC2 to.

Here are your options (with appx. cost):

1. Add an extra ethernet adapter to PC1 and link PC2 to PC1 with a cross over cable (looks like a regular ethernet cable but some wires are switched). This is a reliable way of connecting. You will need to buy the extra ethernet adapter and cross over cable ( about 10$ each). The down side is that this is tricky to configure if you are not computer savvy (and given your question, forgive me, I do not think you are).

2. Via a central hub / device. This is by far the easiest. Pick up a cheap router. Any old beast will do if you go wired. Expect to find those for <20$ on eBaY or Amazon Marketplace. Connect the cable modem to the WAN port and the computers with regular ethernet cable to the LAN ports (most routers come with 4 LAN ports and 1 WAN port). Super easy and cheap and the setup is simply some wizard screens you run via a manual.

you have two ways to go about this.

Either way you have to buy some equipment.

1. The least expensive way is 'Internet Connection Sharing'.

You'll have to put an additional network card in the computer for the second one to connect to. Assign a static IP address of 192.168.0.2.

Then share out the first network card. It automatically gets an IP address of 192.168.0.1.

When the first one is connected, the second one is connected too.

2. The other way, and probably less trouble for you, is get a wired router. Should cost about $20, you don't need a wireless router for this. Connect the cable modem to the router. Router gets an IP address automatically from the modem, then gives out new addresses to the two computers.

If the modem has another Ethernet port connect it there.

If the modem only has 1 ethernet then you need a router or a hub.

once you place in the USB disk to connect the two desktops the computer created a clean BRIDGED connection (honestly seen from the record of internet connections). The bridged connection creates a shared connection for the internet and each thing works stable as long as the two desktops are related and the USB motive force is up and working. yet as quickly as you eliminate something or do something affecting that stability the internet get admission to would be affected. recommendations: a million) Recreate the USB Bridged connection from scratch and leave it there in spite of while you're no longer making use of the two desktops. 2) Recreate the USB Bridged connection and then suitable click on it and decide the alternative UNBRIDGE 3) only DELETE all connections and re-create them from scratch, with all parameters. i for my area desire this permits.
