Help with wireless network?

Question

I just got a router for my desktop and laptop computers. I have everything connected and working ok at least I hope everything is ok. When I go to connect to my network on the laptop it says I am connecting to a unsecure wireless network. How do I make it a secure network? This is all new and very confussing to me. Any help would be great.

Enable WEP or WPA encryption. That will be in your router configuration settings, login to your router and follow the instructions that were included to turn it on. Once you have done that when you connect to the network, Windows will ask you for the network key. You will only have to enter it once and your computer will remember it but no one else in the area will be able to connect to the network.



WPA encryption is stronger but WEP is older and hence will be compatible with older devices that may not support the WPA encryption standard.

There should be instructions in your manual to access the router via an IP address and login to configure it. Once you do that, there should be a Security screen, where you can configure Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP) or other authentication means. Once you set that up though, you'll have to setup your laptop to use the same key, for example, to access the router. Even this is not perfectly secure, but it's at least better than a totally unsecure network.

As far as "unsecure wireless network" message is concerned, this is OK. Nothing to worry about. Why exactly it is happening is bcose u r using a latest verson of Internet Explorer which has a tendency to give u a security warning. More over wireless networks networks are not so secure as wired ones. So take it easy. In case u have installed any Anti-Virus on u re computer and its regularly updated there isnothing to worry. Just CHILL

Your router is unsecured by default. To secure it you need to enable security. It should have an IP address (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254) Open your web browser and type in http://192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254, whichever works. This will bring up the web interface of your router. There will be a security tab. You want to enable security. Given a choice, use WEP 64-bit encryption. Use whatever you want as a passphrase. This will generate the WEP keys. Write down the first one, then go to your laptop. Reconnect to your wireless network (which will now show "secured"). It will prompt you for the WEP key. Type it in... presto@! you've got a secured wireless network.

The software that comes with the router should have a feature to turn on a secure network SSL 128 I believe. You just have to click the checkmark and provide a security key to secure the network. This will prevent someone from surfing the web via your connection unless they know the security key.

Hint : your ip address for your router most likely be 192.168.2.1 if you connected to the dsl or cable modem.
