Hello, I have a quick question I would love to have the answer to. How long does it take for a Optic Fiber Cable to be installed? I'm asking this because I requested for better internet due to the super slow internet I have (.50 Down .2 Up and 650 ping!!!) and I guess it got accepted because I live in the country and I have a big front yard and back yard from the beginning of my driveway its like 150 feet to my house. I also have 2 neighbors. One has a driveway like mine but farther to get to the house, maybe like 300 feet. I then have the other neighbor driveway go straight to his house so from the beginning of his driveway to his house is like 20 feet. So nobody is right up against each other. Both of my neighbors are not like living house but work places. On one side they have a bunch of machinery and that kind of stuff, on the other its like the same thing but not as much machinery. To get to my point is that on one of my neighbors house that there is a field in between me, one of the fields is just a plain field where the 300 feet driveway is and one is my field that separates me and the 20 feet driveway from being right ext to each other. IN each field there are no trees so there are 2 open fields with nothing in them just sitting there. Today I saw some workers working in the 300 feet driveway field and they came to my house and told me there is going to be a guy in my yard measuring or something. I asked why and he said that they are installing a Optic Fiber Cable from AT&T. I said OK and they went on with there thing. So they made a line where I''m guessing the fiber cable was going to go (I don't know anything at all about this) and it went through my yard probably about 30 feet away from my house but still in my property. I learned that Fiber Cable is a type of internet so I was super excited to learn that I am getting better internet. They dug a hole in the field seperating me from 20 feet driveway house and they got this big truck with orange cable and they spun it into the ground. I don't know what else they're doing but I did see those crane things they use to dig out stuff (It was a small one not a huge one and I can't remember the name of it lol) in the 300 feet driveway house's field but I didn't see if they were digging a hole to recieve the orange cable or not or even if they do that (like I said I know nothing about this). So I was wondering how long will it take for this to be installed and when will it be available. This is the first day I've seen them working on this and they came into my yard and notified me about this but I would like to know when will it be done? Thanks if you need anymroe clarification tell me because I don't know alot about Fiber Cables. Thanks

When ATT installed new fiber in my area, they used the same system. It took there years after the cable was placed for the service to be upgraded! So, it won't be soon.

Running the line is just the start of the process.

First, if you have a land line phone a provider could give you DSL Internet service through it. It might not be the best if the exchange is far away but it will be better than satellite. Tou have a DISH, not a DISK.

Second, what has the Internet got to do with massive amounts of machinery?

The orange tube is just to accommodate the fiber optic cable, so they can just pull it through and remove and replace it if it ever gets damaged. They will NOT run fiber optic cable overhead except in extreme and generally only emergency situations as it makes the cable far to vulnerable to damage. One end of the cable MUST go to a connection with a longer fiber cable from the exchange. They would probably have used a mole tunneling digger to make a deep continuous tunnel from the entry point to the exit point of the tube. This remove the need to dig trenches or impinge on your land. The time it takes to complete will depend on how far you are from the exchange and if they have already laid cable part way to your location. A long distance to lay could take months to complete.

If this is a direct response to your request for better service, you do realise they bill you the whole cost of the install.

Several Factors.

Where is the Closest Fiber Optic Cable head or PIT where they can attache the cable to your House.

How many feet is it - they will either have to dig a trench and run it over head. the hardest part is digging the trench. After that it should not take more that 3 or 4 hours.

Unfortunately, At&t rarely ever brings fiber up to the actual home. Usually when they install fiber it is for their Uverse service, which is sort of a glorified DSL service and runs to your house over copper telephone wires. That would still be a lot better than what you have currently (potentially up to 45 Mbps) but it is hard to say whether or not that is what the fiber will be used for. If they are still around, you might be able to find out if it is for Uverse. They are traditionally pretty secretive.

Can you get At&t DSL now? Or only satellite?

The answer to you questions can be found by calling your local AT&T office and asking why they are installing an underground circuit on your land. It sounds like they are running an underground trunk line that probably is running to one of their remote sites and not for (directly) supplying access to customers.

By the way, the tube is just an interduct, they will pull the fiber through it later.
