So basically, I was installing Linux Ubuntu 13.04 on a dell dimension E310 with windows XP and I told it to completely delete everything on the hard drive, and basically it would spin around, go to the location screen, then give me an error message containing nothing but question marks, and I tried this a few times, but I got the same error every time. So I hit quit, quit, etc, so incouldnjust get out of it, and then it just took me to the desktop. So right now I'm trying to turn it off, but its lagging immensely. Like I thought it was frozen for about 2 minutes while typing this, then I got here :/. Please help

Sounds to me like you either have a bad download or a system memory problem. Did you run a memory test (should be a good one on the menu screen for your install) . The best way to do a full install is to burn a boot able DVD of your download. Then boot from the DVD to install!

First of all Ubuntu 13.04 is unstable and experimental!

Second of all you should have tried 12.04 LTS=Long Term Support version!

Third of all you should have shrinked your C:\ Drive where Windows is installed and have unallocated space for Linux instead of installing Linux on C:\ drive and making run as slow and unstable as Windows!

And last but not least you should have burned a CD/DVD image and boot from the cd after restarting the computer and choose the option to install linux beside Windows so that Linux would create fast and stable ext4 Partitions instead of relying on slow and fragmenting NTFS C:\Drive

1) Ubuntu IS NOT the best distro. You have probably just experienced one reason why firsthand. Fedora is a MUCH BETTER distro.

2) You should be EXTREMELY CAREFUL with the partitioning tool, it sounds like you just erased Windows altogether. Anything you had on Windows is gone forever.

3) Linux should not lag. At all. You probably have almost no RAM and/or no swap partition. Or you're running from an overloaded LiveCD. Add a 2GB swap partition on a fresh install of Fedora and you should be good.

Did you download the 32 bit iso or the 64? you need the 32 bit.

Do you have enough ram? You need at least 1 gig, although it will work with a little less. Your processor should be good.

I have run older versions of Ubuntu on a Dell Dem. P3 866 mhz, with 512 ram.

How much ram have you got? If you're low on ram try the 'alternate' boot discs (separate iso), the installer is different and you don't have a live session, just the installer, so it won't hang if there's not enough memory. In this case you'd want to be using lubuntu not ubuntu.

Also if you are able to boot into a live session, use the 'disks' tool to check the hard drive for errors. Could be your hdd is knackered.

Just for sh*ts and giggles, see if it will boot puppy.
