I've just got a smart tv and want to connect it to a router. The manual says I need a Cat 5 SPT LAN cable. I've been looking online but the closest I can find is Cat 5e STP Network cable, or Cat 5e STP RJ45 male to male patch cable. I know this makes me seem pretty dim but the more I try and find out about this stuff, the more confused I get. Are these all the same type of cable and if not, which one best matches what I need?

CAT 5 cables are categorised as CAT 5 and CAT 5E. The only difference is reduction in cross talk in CAT 5E. Cross Talk is the signal in one wire inducing or interfering with the signal in another wire. You can get one from ebay. Generally Smart TVs come with wifi and your router will be able to connect directly with out any cable. You may have to configure your smart TV for this. Read the TV manual. If this information is not avaialble use google to search for a online manual and see how wifi is configured. Even for CAT 5 cable configuration of the TV will be required. Ask your TV supplier for help. Or your internet service provider will be able to help you. They are very knowledgeable about the configuration process.

When I got a smart TV last year, I did not need any cable. It detected a wireless signal and asked for the password.

If you don't have a wireless router, any Cat 5 cable will do. This search will help:

RJ 45 is a standard connector
