What would be the best way to save an outlook pst file on a network instead of locally on a pc?

I want to save our company's outlook pst files on the network for every user but can't think of the best way to set it up. I'm not sure if I should save he pst to the network or leave in on the local machine and have a copy of it somewhere on the network. Has anyone done this before? Does anyone have suggestions on the best way to set this up? Thanks!

You can easily move the pst file to a shared network drive.

The next time outlook is started i will complain about not finding it and the user can reopen in the displayed open dialog.

You can also move the file and change the entry for it in the registry it is stored at

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\....

Depending on your Version of Outlook but the exact entry can be easily find issuing a find in regedit unter HKEY_CURRENT_USER with ".pst".

Either way you will get a speed penalty in puting the files on the shared drive - but you will able to do serious backups there!

You should save it to the network, preferably the users home directory from the start. If you keep them on the local drive and depend on them to get copied to the network it won't happen regularly and will take up too much of an admins time. Write up a doc on how to do it using screen prints and distribute it to all the end users and keep it on the network somewhere for people to access it. It is a very good practice as the files get backed up and pst files aren't that stable. You also run into the 2 gig limit on pst's and then a user cannot open it and it is a pain to fix.

Laptop users pose a problem though, you can have the pst saved onto a network drive then setup Offline File Synchronization to keep them synced and avail when they aren't connected to the network. I have added a link to Microsoft on how to do that.

As for the speed hit, it's only email so it usually isn't a big deal.

Another thought: To avoid the pst issues why not just let the users keep the email in their exchange mailbox. With hard drive space costing less you can just make sure you have plenty of room. Teach your users to only keep necessary emails and to save attachments and delete them from the emails. Even Microsoft admits that pst files are not very stable and tend to get corrupted.

You can't, that is why we hate outlook. You might want to look into getting an email provider for your company. We are switching to a company called first class. Everything is web based so all of there files are saved to there server which you can access through the web. Users can access there email from any PC. There is also a client that you can install so users can customize their settings, but it is not needed. You might want to look into something like this for your company

I definitely believe you nevertheless the "Outlook Mac Exporter" application which you're discussing approximately has a loose Demo version too which subsequently will enable to transform preliminary 25 emails from OLM to PST, EML and MSG report. besides its worth choosing; have confidence me..
