What is a I.P address. I know it indedtifies you on the internet, but does it do it from your computer or your network. I had issues with pay pal and have been told they trace your I.P address. I have since changed address, computer and internet provider (at new address) and have started using my girlfriends paypal. However I am settin up a wireless network and was going to set my old computer up. Will this show up my old IP address or will the old IP address remain with my old internet provider?

Your IP address is based on your ISP and your modem. It has nothing to do with your computer. Its the address that your ISP gives to your modem. Usually most dsl/cable providers give you a semi-permanent address. Meaning, unless you reset your modem you keep the same address. Usually resetting your modem works, sometimes you have to leave it off for a couple of days to get a reset, it depends how your ISP sets it up. Getting a new modem will also change your IP.

depends if they use IP or MAC addresses but you are right in your thinking for the most part about IP. Your old ISP owns that old IP address but you only get one IP address per service anyway so technically all the PCs in that house show as the same IP but internally the have a private IP that is different.

I think that if you have a new provider you will have a new IP address. there is software that you can use to change your IP address. It is also possible to use proxy servers by first searching for an IP and putting it in your LAN settings. Go to your "internet tools", then "internet options", then to the "connections" tab, go to "LAN settings". In there you'll be able to put your Proxy server's address in along with the port number. do some research on the web about proxy servers and what they do.

the ip address is a single identifying number that is assigned by the internet service provider to your computer ( or network) on the internet
