Why can't I connect to this minecraft server?

Ok, so I'm trying to connect to a minecraft server which I have been playing on for a while now, but when I load up minecraft and click multiplayer this happens:

Firstly it immediately says that it can't reach the server and it has the red cross over the latency icon, when i refresh the same thing happens.

Then if I try to connect to it it says this immediately:

"Failed to connect to server" in grey, with
"Connection refused" in white underneath.

I don't understand what the problem is as its quite a big server (as in popular, it has it's own website and all that) and im pretty sure i haven't been banned from it or anything like that.

Any assistance on how I can connect to and play on it again would be great, thanks.

PS-
I checked on the website and it doesn't say anything about this issue.

if it says connection refused then odds are you have been banned, or more likely just not whitelisted, if they have a website have a look on there and see if they have moved over to being a whitelist only site. you can apply that way.

I'm very sorry to say but if it says "connection refused" than you have been either banned or they made a whitelist and you are not on it.
