Question:
How do I make my ISP unable to detect that multiple people are using one router?

I am living with 3 other people in an apartment, the only ISP we can get only gives you one crappy plan, and it is a lot to pay for it every month, it would be easier if we're all sharing one line. But the ISP seems to have a way to detect if there are multiple people on the router at once, and kicks the extra people off the internet. What can I do to make my ISP unable to detect when there are multiple people on the same router? I have heard something about cloning the IP address from a friend who lives in the neighborhood, but he's not sure how it works either. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

your ISP cant detect that. and they can't kick certain people off of your router. They could kick your whole router off their circuit if they want but not certain users behind your router.

Your router gives each pc a private IP address not even your ISP can see then any time traffic is sent through the router, the router masks that private IP to the 1 public IP your ISP assigned you so as far as anyone outside can tell, there is 1 IP and device online.

If people are getting kicked off its because of something else, not your ISP.

I run an ISP and we like most ISPs sell a certain amount of bandwidth and 1 IP address (well unless they pay for more) so for example a 1.5 meg DSL with dynamic IP. your router will get 1 dynamic IP and you get 1.5 megs of bandwidth, if you split that up between multiple PCs thats your perogative.

Some ISP's will have in there terms & conditions that you can't "resell" services but you can mask multiple PCs behind a router and they have no way of knowing

The Isp will be working on the external ip address assigned to you when you connect. The computers connected to your router will have internal ip addresses. A router works on ip addresses and it wont forward the mac addresses of the computers connected to your router - only the mac address connected to the isp will be forwarded. Wether they use that mac depends if you are using pppoe or not ( with adsl that is ) I think the issue of the other computers dropping off will be an internal issue, especially if you are using a wireless router. Isp's tend to be annoyed about having multiple computers connected when it comes to technical support because it is harder to fix a networking issue over the phone when its not related to their service and time is money. Saying you cant have more than one computer connected to a router is like saying you cant have more than one telephone connected in your house for your phone number it doesnt matter what you do with the service especially because more computers means more downloading = more money

There's no such thing as the ISP is able to detect how many people using the same connection. A router basically works as a gateway from 3 of you to the internet. No matter how many people squeezed in the gateway, only one connection was made to the internet. Maybe this is because you haven't configure NAT (Network Address Translation) properly on your router. You should give the router brand and model.

What can you do. Your ISP clearly doesn't want you doing this and it is in violation of their policy. If you don't like their policy cancel your account. If you owned the ISP you wouldn't want people violating the policy. I agree it sure is extreme by your ISP but it is there right.

And yes, despite what the person says above it is very easy for an ISP to detect multiple users from your router. Heck any basic sniffer will do that. They probably have a half decent network analyzer appliance.

it is really possible and they can detect invalide mac,or user on their system but it is not possible to block user behind the router and they can't kick you out and they can't reconize that the user behind the router so u can share as you like and the reason that some people on the router unable to surf net is may be some people or isp is changing you router setting they know your router setting it is possible they can access your router and change the setting and block user so set strong password on your router set dos protection enable set somthing like they can't ping there is lot's of option that u can set on your router for protection

If i tell you you wouldn't do it anyway but you asked for help so i'll tell you anyway!!!

tell them to format their computers since they are now officially hacked amd detected by the Internet Service Provider!!!

and i would recommend them to install and format their computer as specified on the website below for maximum results

http://computersguide.blogspot.com/2007/01/install-computers.html

and the EXTREME FIRST THING THAT THEY SHOULD DO AFTER THEY FORMAT THEIR COMPUTERS IS INSTALL ABSOLUTELY EVERY SINGLE UPDATE INCLUDING OPTIONAL ONES, ABSOLUTELY EVERY SINGLE UPDATE FROM MICROSOFT WINDOWS UPDATE WEBSITE BELOW

http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

IF YOU FOLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS YOU CAN NOT POSSIBLY HAVE PROBLEMS EVEN IF YOU TRIED!!!

BUT LIKE YOU ARE REALLY GOING TO BELIVE ME ANYWAY!!! WHO TO HELL AM I KIDDING!!!
