The router actually has 2 different kinds of security:

1 - the password you use to log in to the router when you want to change its settings.

2 - the password for the wireless network that the router creates; you need to enter this password on your computer when you want to initially connect it to the wireless network.

The instructions for your router will describe how to change both, and you should change both - for the 1st password above, the only thing you need to do is create a password for logging in. For the 2nd password - sometimes called "network encryption" or "network security type", you need to also choose the security type. You might see choices like "WEP" and "WPA-PSK". If you see "WPA-PSK", that is the best choice.

Assuming you have a wireless router and a wireless card in your laptop. Look for a switch on the edge of your computer where you can turn on the wireless card on your laptop. Turn the switch off if it's on and then back on and it should connect automatically. I'm going to look up your computer in the meantime try that.

To provide the security key , in the wireless network , you can use WEP key .

WPA2 Personal - CCMP/AES is more secure than TKIP, in which a vulnerability was found last fall. I believe. If you can get that configured correctly, that would offer more security.

Another consideration is MAC authentication, which offers you a white-list solution regarding which clients are allowed to associate with the AP. It doesn't make the connection "secure" though. i.e. No encryption.

You can make screen shots of the router interface and post them here or post them on the net and post the link here

You must be talking about WEP key.

Go to the default router page. Im guessing its http://192.168.1.1.

Then choose a security option. WPA-2 is probably the best. Never go for WEP since it's easily crackable.

A D-Link router is accessed by using http://192.168.0.1 and not http://192.168.1.1 or http://www.192.168.1.1 as you mentioned. Since your wireless isn't currently working, you must make the changes below using a computer which is connected to the router by a network cable.

Again:

Go to http://192.168.0.1

Enter admin for the user name, leave the password blank

If you are unable to login to the router through a wired connection this way, then you can reset the router to its factory settings:

To reset your router, use the following steps:

1. Press the router's reset button for 10 seconds. You can use a small object, such as a paper clip to hold down the button. Do not power off the unit while the router is being reset.

2. The unit should now reboot, and once the WLAN light stops blinking the router should be reset.

3. Open up your Web browser and enter 192.168.0.1 in the address bar.

4. For the login, enter admin as the ID and leave the password blank.

Securing Your Wireless Connection:

When you secure the wireless connection you use a numeric "key" and not a "password".

To enable security, once you access the router from a computer connected to the router via a network cable:

1. Click the button labeled "Wireless"

2. make Sure "Wireless" is "Enabled"

3. Set "Security" to "WEP"

4. Replace "Key 1" with a string of 10 numbers of your own choosing

5. Optional: Set alternate keys if you wish.

6. Click the "Apply" button

If you want a little extra security, set "SSID Broadcast" to "Disable". This way people in the area with wireless cards will not see your network on their list of available networks. You won't be able to see it either, but when connecting to a wireless network on your laptop you will find an option to "Connect to a hidden network". The "Wireless" screen in the router will show you what your SSID is, and it will allow you to change it. Just be aware that the SSID is case sensitive.

Connecting to a hidden wireless network

After you checked your wireless network settings as shown above, you can configure the laptop to automatically connect to a specific wireless network that uses a hidden SSID. To do this, follow these steps on the laptop with the network cable removed:

1. Click "Start", click "Run", type "ncpa.cpl" without the quotes, and then click "OK".

2. In the "Network Connections" window, right-click "Wireless Network Connection", and then click "Properties".

3. In the "Wireless Network Connection Properties" dialog box, click the "Wireless Networks" tab.

4. Under "Preferred networks", click the SSID profile name for the wireless network that uses a hidden SSID, and then click "Properties".

5. Click the "Connection" tab, click to select "Connect when this network is in range", and then click "OK".

6. Click "OK" to close the "Wireless Network Connection Properties" dialog box.

7. Close the "Network Connections" window.

If all elsefails, install Cisco's "Network Magic" program on your laptop. You can download it at www.purenetworks.com. The Pro features of the program only work for 30 days, but the Basic features of the free version are all you need to solve this problem. Then have NetWork Magic manage your wireless connection on the laptop.

You might also consider asking Verizon if they can provide you with a new wireless modem for your DSL service. That way you can get customer service for your wireless connection.
