Ubuntu is getting kinda old and I'm using Ubuntu 10.04.... yes I know thats an old version but the new Ubuntu 12.04 doesn't work well.

I'm looking for a simple linux with a Ubuntu kinda layout and something secure and up to date to where I won't have problems with online flash players and plug-ins ext when I'm online and possibly support some windows software.

Thanks

Ubuntu 10.04 used the Gnome 2 interface, which you won't find many distros using anymore since Gnome stopped supporting it years ago. CentOS, RHEL, Fuduntu, and Debian Squeeze all still offer Gnome 2.

The MATE desktop is a continuation of Gnome 2; the project it's most associated with at the moment is Linux Mint. Linux Mint also offers the Cinnamon desktop , something you may like as well, since it's designed to look and act like a 'traditional' desktop (i.e, not Unity or Gnome 3).

XFCE-based distros are also worth a look. Xubuntu is a nice choice if you like the benefits of running Ubuntu but don't enjoy Unity.

I use Zorin 3.5 which is a Ubuntu remaster using 10.04 but supported by ppa launchpad which keeps the system up to date withou going to a Newer version. I have also remaster Zorin so it is using Ubuntu 10.10 Mavrick and the ppa launchpad. As many different distributions I have used and installed (250) I don't see that much advantage for me to change what I use. Ubuntu 12.04 works OK on my computers but tends to lag when doing things. It shouldn't be doing this on a 3.6 GHZ computer with 4GB of Ram. And it really doesn't matter to me because I do not like the new KDE at all and even the remasters using Gnome lags also.

Find a remaster of Debian using the testing repositories, because it offers more files for the Debain Linux than the standard distribution does and keeps up to date. I would not recommend PCLinuxOS for some personal reasons when it comes to that remaster distribution with Desktop environments other than KDE. Every one of the redistributions Break when you use upgrade. I am not a Fan of Fedora either. I'm sure you will get all kinds of suggestions and you need to decide what best fits you.

if 12.04 doesnt work for you im guessing you are using older equipment as most modern stuff can handle the unity desktop nicely. If you have been used to the ubuntu commands and way of working then there are a few distributions that use ubuntu as the base but are nowhere near as intensive on the computer, my favourite is lubuntu, but there is xubuntu and kubuntu the letter just depicts the graphic interface.

Lubuntu is the lightest on resources using lxdbe (i think its called) and works on old kit well

Xubuntu uses another slightly more intense

and kubuntu uses KDE (which frankly i hate) but is lighter than ubuntu.

Lubuntu is used in some schools and can use all the software and commands from debian and ubuntu.

I'm another vote that you give xubuntu a try. With, maybe, ten minutes of tweaking you can get it to look just like ubuntu 10.04 with gnome. That was the first thing I changed.

You get all the benefits of 12.04 and few drawbacks.

If you are comfortable with Ubuntu, you should really try a distro that is Ubuntu based, Like Linux Mint.

i exploit ubuntu and that i like it. although i visit declare that it is so plenty greater complicated to place in some classes. the subject is with linux structures is that no longer all classes contain an installer (unlike in homestead windows). i will permit you comprehend this in spite of the undeniable fact that... while i began utilising linux, i replaced into very uncertain on the thank you to place in classes that i wanted utilising the command line. fortuitously in case you purely seek on google, there are rather thousands and thousands of websites and blogs, that would tell u the thank you to place in any application that u choose. If u could choose to be taught a clean working device, and dont ideas being affected person with gaining information of it. linux based structures are im my opinion magnificent.

Try Fedora, it is good and simple. Zorin os is also fine, it looks like a mixture of linux and windows.
Wait...what?
